In September 2015, Brett Piva of Pocket Design was lucky enough to join Sign Painting legend Mike Meyer in London to assist teaching in his workshop with Better Letters at Borough Markets as part of London Design Festival. With Mike heading to Australia very soon with his workshops, I thought it is good timing to share the incredible experience I had during my time in London with the Better Letters crew.

This is Brett’s English tale of lettering, high vis and trademark flanno’s.

Mike Meyer, Better Letters and London Design Festival

Mike Meyer is a legend of the sign trade from Mazeppa Minnesota USA who has been hand painting signs for over 30 years and is travelling the globe teaching the craft of lettering through his personal workshops with Better Letters. Sam from Better Letters organises and produces practical, fun and creative hand-lettering workshops that provide the opportunity to learn from leading practitioners in the industry from around the globe.

Two characters passionate about lettering, it’s culture and good laughs.

The London Design Festival is an annual event, held to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world and as the gateway to the international creative community. After enquiring with Better letters about workshop opportunities at London Design Festival, I was offered to assist Mike for two days at his Borough Markets workshop for London Design Festival 2015. I jumped at this opportunity and quickly started organising the trip.

Memories of my experience as a Graphic Designer in London Advertising agencies started flooding back. The big brand clients, the late night pitches, the incredible projects and amazing people made me grin from ear to ear. Then I reminisced about the night life, bars, galleries, live music, London parks, Ales, Lagers and the small things like the snacks I couldn’t wait to try again. First stop, a bag of Monster Munch!

Second stop, meet with Mike & Sam and head to traditional sign supply store A.S. Handovers to stock up for the workshops and purchase an abundance of brushes and equipment to bring home. Having used Handover brushes from the age of 15 , this experience is one I’ll always remember. So many brushes!!!

Sam, Brett and Mike at A.S. Handover UK.

Then it was time to wander the streets of London on our way to set up for the class and view some historic lettering and signage… with a lot of goofing off in-between. The level of craftsmanship in the work around London shows a true understanding and dedication to lettering. Each shop front holds a great respect for London’s history and the sign trade.

Gold leaf decorative lettering in London. London has a true respect for a cities history on every corner.

London’s Historic Hand Painted Advertising can be found in many back streets of the city.

Intensive Sign Painting Workshops at Borough Markets

The workshop was held in Borough markets in central London over two days as part of London Design festival. Each lesson had 20 keen attendees ready to dive into painting beautiful lettering in 3 different styles.

Assisting Mike in these workshops I got a better understanding of how much he loves this trade. It’s his legacy which is ingrained in his DNA. He speaks so fondly of his lettering experience, his sign shop back home and how the brush has taken him around the world over the past 30 years. He’s such a positive guy and a great teacher to be around who is one of the most dedicated practitioners of the craft that I’ve met.

Over two days Mike and I would demonstrate practices and guide each student one on one while we moved around the workshop getting to know each participant. Each class consisted of a diverse range of students of numerous skill levels and ages. Designers, tattoo artists, Graffiti Writers, Stonemasons, Illustrators and just those curios to do something new were great to be hanging out with discussing the design and arts scene of London that I was once immersed in.

Sam was just as dedicated to the workshops as Mike. Running back and forth making sure everything worked perfectly and on schedule. In between, he was entertaining passers by with his knowledge of Signwriting, the workshop tour and historic lettering sights of London. Sam even picked up a quick job for Mike and I to work on straight after the class which was an extra little treat for my time in London.

Giving more to London

I asked Mike if we could bring one of the students with us that was showing potential and the three of us headed out into the city for a long night of painting and loud laughter. Jay was a keen young leather worker who was interested in lettering who mentioned to me during a break that all he wanted was to go out on a real job with real Sign Painters. He was stoked to be invited and painted past midnight trying to keep his hand steady while laughing at Mike’s tales of the sign game and continuous banter with passers by.

No idea where they are headed but ready to hit it. Mike, Jay and Brett with their make shift Sign Kit.

Mike and Jay adding the finishing touches on a London Shop front.

Brett getting the rounds in on the late night London sign job.

The Better Letters Experience

Teaching classes in Lettering and Signwriting over the past few years, it was incredible to join Mike and Sam in the UK to witness how they host their workshops. A more than professional outfit that I’m very proud to have been a part of. Mike and Sam are great characters to be around who are highly skilled in their individual pursuits on the brush and connecting a world wide lettering community. For anyone interested in attending their classes, they are sure to entertain and will have you speaking about them for years to come.

So many laughs, adventures and meeting many dedicated and enjoyable students was incredible. Meeting other Signwriters and glass artists I’ve admired for a long time like Ash and Sarah Bishop of Brilliant Sign Co and a quick trip to Bristol to meet Cooper of Dapper Signs were more great experiences for this trip.

I can’t thank Sam and Mike enough for this time in London with Better Letters. Being around such dedicated practitioners and promoters of lettering was a more than rewarding experience. I highly recommend Better Letters workshops to anyone interested or practicing lettering at a beginner or professional level.

Better Letters Album Cover – Always time for goofing off in between setting up.

Getting started on the brush

Pocket Design has always housed a strong focus on supporting Newcastle’s community and the arts within our community to push our cities growth through our unique ideas, creative direction and wide range of practices. Since 2012 we’ve highly contributed to supporting many loved brands and local icons that have been a valuable component to our cities growth and without our support, may not have become the highly recognisable brands they are today. This is the first in a series of journal entries about projects we have donated many hours to along with strong ideas that have supported our cities growth. I’m sure you will know them quite well. The first study we’d like to share with you is HUNT&GATHER Markets.

Left to Right: 2013 and 2014 Logo directed by HUNT&GATHER. Current logo directed and designed by Pocket Design.

Creating for Good

HUNT&GATHER approached Pocket Design in search of some much-needed assistance in late 2013. Karla and Gemma, moving from Sydney, were new to our community and wanted to start something they enjoyed over their weekends. They approached Pocket Design with thoughts of hosting a new market that was slightly different to other markets in town.

They had two components to their market that we were interested in and we wanted this to be the main focus. These were giving small local artists and musicians a voice and boosting the cities East End. With the slow but successful growth of Newcastle’s CBD we believed a market in Pacific Park of Newcastle East would be a great opportunity for our city to grow even more and bring attention to another area that still needed support.

New to Newcastle and the local creative community HUNT&GATHER was still getting to know our home grown creative contacts. Not knowing any musicians, foodies, event planners or the right marketing contacts, Pocket Design assisted HUNT&GATHER with sharing everyone we knew in these industries to assist in bringing their first market to life. With interest from a core group of stall holders, Pocket Design managed to call in favours from a large amount of artists, creative makers and musicians we knew that could help in hosting a stall and also attending the market. Many meetings, calls to suppliers, social media engagements, ideas and deliverables were created at no cost.

In supporting the market we designed their first logo, flyer, poster and social media content at a quarter of the cost we’d normally charge for their next two seasonal markets. We also shared marketing, accounting, social media and valuable business advice that would assist each market gaining more stall holders and public awareness and attendance. All in support of HUNT&GATHER’s vision and the further growth of our city.

2013 and 2014 Flyer designs directed by HUNT&GATHER.

Being directed by both Karla and Gemma’s vision for the design materials the small market was slowly becoming a success. From a creative perspective we knew it needed more. With some kind persuasion, Pocket Design pitched an idea that would bring the right awareness to what would become a strong and much loved Newcastle icon.

Pocket Design Collaborating for Newcastle

In 2012 Pocket Design invited long time collaborator Hannah Rose Robinson to contribute to Pocket Designs goals for the market and the support for the city through this newly pitched idea that was bound to take the market to a much higher level.

Through Pockets Direction and the keen eye of photographer Hannah Rose Robinson, we created a strong creative campaign that would last two seasonal changes and continue to be shared and loved by HUNT&GATHER stall holders and supporters. See the full campaign here.

2015 Spring/Summer Hunt&Gather creative. Directed and designed by Pocket Design. Photography by Hannah Rose Robinson.

The campaign spread quickly via social media and gained them awareness in blogs, online magazines and publications across Australia. HUNT&GATHER’s brand presence had quickly grown.

This boost in brand awareness gave HUNT&GATHER more store holders, more public awareness and brought even more people to visit the East End of Newcastle throughout all seasons. Cafés, Restaurants and shops in the East End were being supported again.

Bigger and brighter for a new night market

With the success of their latest campaign HUNT&GATHER shared a new idea with Pocket Design that a night market was in planning. We were quick to come up with another valuable idea and direction for this new event with more donated hours to support the city and the creative community.

SIGN IMAGE

We saw an opportunity to physically construct a brand idea that could instantly connect the community to this new concept of a night market. We pitched the idea of constructing a logo made of timber with lights that could be used in all of HUNT&GATHER’s promotional materials and be seen shining bright during the event.

Pocket Design directed a successfully planned shoot with Hannah Rose Robinson to bring awareness to the SUNSET GATHER brand. Local East End legend ‘WOODY’ also featured in the shoot to connect the community to the East End. Once again, we provided all promotional materials at heavily discounted rates that saw flyers, posters, web banners and social media content created to support the east end and many local creatives. Once again, our collaborators and supporters for the shoot were willing to donate their time.

The SUNSET GATHER Campaign gained huge awareness for HUNT&GATHER’s first night market seeing their largest contribution of stall holders surrounded by a packed out audience of shoppers, diners and music lovers. It felt great to have provided such a strong brand presence and direction for this new event for Newcastle’s East End.

IMAGES

New goals for Autumn and Winter

In 2016 we were once again called upon to direct and support HUNT&GATHER’s Autumn/Winter campaign with a beautifully stylised shoot featuring more valuable support by Hannah Rose Robinson, local make up artists, florists and high end talent for the shoot. Another enlightening campaign was achieved and again boosted HUNT&GATHER’s audience.

With each of these major projects in mind, Pocket Design donated time to creating flyers, posters, web banners social media tiles and cover images. We have always donated ideas, concepts, advice and many design and direction hours to support the growth of HUNT&GATHER, Newcastle’s East End and our creative community.

Thanks to our supporters

Looking back it was all a great success for Newcastle and we couldn’t be happier with the results created. With a tiny flea market style event starting at only 18 stall holders then growing with our support to over 110 stall holders, we couldn’t be prouder of what we helped produce. We’d like to express our warmest thanks to Hannah Rose Robinson and all other collaborators and supporters for their efforts. Your donated time, skill sets and dedication to our city will not go overlooked by Pocket Design and the greater Newcastle audience. I’m sure the HUNT&GATHER community all agree that we achieved higher goals within each campaign while creating for a better city and the support of local creatives.

Huge thanks those who enjoy our work created for HUNT&GATHER. Your support in sharing each seasonal campaign through your networks helped boost the cities east end and was great to see our efforts appear on many social media feeds and online publications.

Creating for a better city has now prompted us to try something new and are moving forward in areas of ‘creating for good’. We are currently working towards new not for profit campaigns and hope to see you once again sharing our work for an even more important cause.

If you have a business that is involved in the arts and can valuably make our city a better place in terms of events, growth, and public interaction or are in need of the arts to support something you are working on for our city, please feel free to contact us. We’d love to hear from you.

SNAPPY CAPS Lettering Workshop

SNAPPY CAPS Lettering Workshop is designed to teach you efficient hand drawn and painted lettering effects to make your lettering not only stand out but also look great.

These lettering effects are more commonly used in the Sign Painting trade but have recently been seen in many forms of Graphic Design such as custom type design for book covers, signage, posters and flyers.

The class walks through various letter effects and applications before hand drawing your very own letter in your choice of 3 given letter styles. The final task of painting your very own 400 x 400mm timber panel with your own desired effects on your hand drawn letter to take home with you.

If you’ve dabbled in Signwriting or have gained a lot of experience in Signwriting via other classes or training, this workshop is tailored for you. Beginners are still welcome to attend though. More experienced attendees will be given a structured drawing processes for the day while beginners will be given the task of learning brush control and technique before being given a pre drawn letter to work with.

The benefits of this workshop comes in the instruction from qualified Traditional Signwriter and Graphic Designer, Brett Piva. With Brett’s extended experience, you’ll take home a wealth of knowledge that will not be left behind in the class room.
